In this lesson you will learn how to use the Flash/Mixture Calculations Tool. The flash mixture program is one of the most powerful options available in the API Technical data book. This module is developed over years working in cooperation with the API Technical data committee and has been proven to outperform the major process simulators in 5 key areas by the API Technical data committee. We will now load an example problem to show how the flash mixture program is used. Select the pure components that make up the stream by clicking on the pure component button. The list of dipper data bank components are shown that can be moved over into the selection pane. Search can be done by component name, molecular formula or cast number. Once the components are selected enter their mole fraction or select if selected their mass flow or mole flow.
Select the key conditions by picking two of the three options of temperature pressure or vapor fraction. Enter the flash conditions by specifying the flash type this will display in orange background the data that needs to be entered. Once the data has been entered run the flash calculations and the results of the phase composition will be shown in the grid below. Changing temperature or pressure will adjust and can modify the phases for example we had two liquid phases of hydro carbon and water and now at this higher or lower pressure the hydrocarbon phase liquid is vaporized into vapor phase there is a remaining liquid aqueous phase. Remaining liquid aqueous phase can be removed by raising the temperature at some point the liquid phase can be removed this is an important aspect to precisely determine when the liquid phase is present to avoid unexpected problems associated with gas compressors, aqueous liquid building up in pipes and equipment that could create a dangerous corrosion problem. Stream properties are available by clicking on stream properties button which will show all the commonly used mixture physical properties used in engineering calculations. Units of measure can be easily change by clicking units measure button and clicking a standard units set or a standard that’s close to your specifications picking custom and changing units as required.
This will conclude our lesson on using the flash/mixture calculations tool.
